Dr. Floyd W. Burke
Dr. Floyd W. Burke, a distinguished cardiologist, hails from Jacksonville, Florida. He completed his medical school education at the University of Florida College of medicine and pursued training in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. With over 25 years of extensive experience in clinical cardiology, private practice, academic cardiology, and Veterans Administration healthcare, Dr. Burke has made significant contributions to the field and is thrilled to be bringing his expertise to the Grand Strand area.
Three decades ago, Drs. Burke, Gresko, and Hicks were fellows in the same cardiology program, where they developed a strong professional and personal camaraderie.
Following fellowship, Drs. Hicks and Burke co-founded a successful cardiology practice in Columbia, SC, where they practiced together for over a decade. Dr. Burke relocated to Gainesville, Florida, where he was recruited back into academia at the University of Florida as an Associate Professor of Medicine, clinical cardiologist, nuclear cardiology and echocardiography expert. In this role, he excelled as a clinician, imaging expert, and mentor, significantly impacting medical students, residents, and cardiology fellows.
He is responsible for envisioning and developing the University of Florida’s renowned Sports & Exercise Cardiology Section – one of the first of such programs in the country, providing academic multidisciplinary team (adult and pediatric cardiology, electrophysiology, genetic medicine, neurology, pulmonology, and sleep medicine) are to athletes at the weekend warrior, high-school, collegiate and professional sports levels.
In 2017, Dr. Burke was recruited to the Orlando VA Medical Center, one of the busiest academic VA medical centers in the country, and the University of Central Florida College of Medicine. There, he played a pivotal role in building an academic and clinical cardiology program for internal medicine residents and cardiology fellows. His leadership roles included serving as Medical Director of Non-Invasive Cardiology, Co-director of Nuclear Cardiology, Co-Director of the Cardiac Amyloidosis Imaging program, Director of the Cardiology Inpatient Service, Director of the Non-Invasive cardiology fellowship and Subspecialty Education Coordinator for UCF College of medicine. In recognition of his career achievements, he was honored to be promoted to Full Professor of Medicine. Dr. Burke states that his most rewarding accomplishments at the Orlando VA Medical Center were teaching and mentoring young physicians and serving the >100,000 Veteran catchment community.
Dr. Burke is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular medicine, nuclear cardiology and adult echocardiography. Renowned as a gifted teacher and compassionate clinician, he has been an exemplary role model for many students, residents, fellows, and young physicians, was the recipient of the Osler Teaching Award and loved by his patients and their families and respected by colleagues. Outside of his professional life, Dr. Burke, a proud Florida Gator, is a devoted family man, who enjoys hunting, boating, fishing, playing guitar, wildlife biology, building custom fishing rods, watching Gator football and reading. His wife, Leslie, a mechanical engineer and commercial broker, is also excited about relocating to the Grand Strand area.
